How to choose a Painting Holiday

What to look for in a painting holiday?

There are many questions you will have when considering which painting holiday and which holiday operator to choose. Here at Creative Holidays Spain we have anticipated some of the most common questions to help guide you with your choice.

The brochures for painting holidays are very tempting and some of the destinations can look idyllic or exotic. You should return home having learned new skills and a renewed enthusiasm and confidence to continue developing your art. With many painting holidays to choose from, how do you decide which one is the most suitable for you?

Here are some issues you should consider when choosing your painting holiday.

Your Tutor
A successful artist does not necessarily make a great teacher. A good tutor will understand your needs, goals, and method of working. Choose a tutor whose work you like and inspires you; but do not expect them to do the work for you in their particular style. Find out whether they run a formal structured course, group tuition, or informal individual tuition, or a mixture of teaching approaches.

The tuition at Creative Holidays Spain is mostly informal, allowing time for individual attention, with a combination of some group tuition at key points during the holiday.

Looking after clients
We are very conscious of the needs of single travellers, especially women. When you are in a strange country you need to feel safe and know that you will be looked after. At Creative Holidays Spain there will be someone avalilable for advice and support thoughout your entire holiday. You are met at the Airport from the moment you get off your flight, and from then on you will always have access to one of the tutors. We also give you a phone number if anything crops up in an emergency over night.

Centre Based or Travel Based?
It can be very rewarding and stimulating traveling to various locations, but consider how much time will be spent traveling, how tiring it can be, and the issue of changing accommodation nearly every day.

Can you spend the time you need on painting or will you spend most of your time only able to produce sketches. You need to consider the quality of your accommodation - if you like your little luxuries consider a centre based painting holiday, where the emphasis will be on teaching new skills in a relaxing environment, rather than seeking new vistas and subject matter.

Here at Creative Holidays Spain we provide a centre based painting holiday, but we also travel around to other locations to paint on some days, giving the best of both worlds.

Being a Beginner
You may still be a beginner, but do not let this put you off. There will be a few beginners on most painting holidays. Everyone was once a beginner and we all continue to learn with each new subject we paint. Many holiday painting courses have people with different levels of skill, and should allow the freedom for advanced painters to express themselves individually or provide close tuition for beginners.

Don’t expect a course to turn you into an expert overnight, but you should learn a great deal, both from the tutor, the other participants, and have the time for expression outside the normal stress of life. If you are a beginner and do not know which paint you would like to work with, then read the advice here about choosing which paint to use.

Get Informed
Do not hesitate to ask questions about the course before booking. A good tutor will be happy to answer your questions. You need to find out if the tuition on the holiday will cover a variety of mediums, how many people have booked , and what you need to take.

At Creative Holidays Spain we offer tuition mainly in oils, acrylics and watercolor painting. As we have 2 tutors that provide instruction within the same week, this allows for a broader range of skills and experience to be passed on to our clients.

What is included - cost and equipment
You need to know exactly what is included in the cost of your painting holiday package so there are no unexpected surprises, and you can be clear of your budget needs. At Creative Holidays Spain the holidays are all inclusive, except for the evening meal on your trip to Ronda, and your lunch on one of the days out. The only extra expenditure will be your personal spending money.

You also need to know what materials and equipment will be provided by your painting holiday provider. You need to take something to sit on if you are painting on location; a folding easel will help you to paint in more comfort rather than using a board on your lap. Take a small backpack to carry your paints and brushes, as well as a container/plastic bottle for your water if you are using watercolours.

At Creative Holidays Spain we provide folding easels and small folding stools for each member of our painting holidays. You will need to bring your own paints, paper, ready made canvases or boards for oils or acrylics and brushes. It is also a good idea to bring a hat with a brim to protect you from the sun and reduce glare in your eyes.

An Inclusive Holiday
At Creative Holidays Spain we provide holidays that are not only inclusive regarding most of your costs, we also provide painting holidays that are inclusive regarding your holiday experience - to give you a true flavour of Spain - including its landscape, its people, its culture as well as cuisine.

We ensure our holidays are not only instructive and creative, we also ensure that our painting holidays are relaxing, fun and memorable, and trust that you will make many new friends.
